■ OVERVIEW

The Society for Art and Science Tohoku Branch will hold a general competition, in which excellent works and assistant technologies for art work creation will be awarded. Details are as follows:

■ ENTRIES

Competition entries should be interactive and non-interactive works and digital technologies in media arts. Applications will be accepted in the form of the artwork itself (still images, videos) or a video presentation (including artwork description and demonstration). Furthermore, for interactive works and digital technologies, it is recommended that applicants conduct their own presentation and demonstration at the exhibition venue on the day of the event. Some of the possible works and technologies are presented below, while the entries are not just limited to the examples.

◆Interactive works:

 Interactive contents and interactive systems: games, media arts, VR/MR contents, robots, interactive installations, physical computing, Web designs, ...

◆Non-interactive works:

 Still images and movie contents created using digital technologies: computer graphics, perspective drawings, design drawings, rendering, movie installations, animations, videos, projection mappings, ...

◆Digital technology:

 Digital technologies and tools that support creation of works and whose validity is confirmed through viewing: CG, CAD, CV, VFX, image/movie processing, communication technologies, sensor technologies, sound technologies, HI/VR devices, real-world interface, physical computation, simulation technologies, visualization technologies, display technologies, ...

(Note: If a presentation or demonstration is not conducted, please make efforts to enable the understanding of the appeal points of the work through the work itself or demo visuals.)

■ APPLICATION PROCEDURE

◆Details of competition

  1. Anybody can apply for this competition. Residence, occupation, and affiliation do not matter.
  2. You may send one or more works.
  3. Apply for the competition from the link described below.
  4. Before you apply for the competition, confirm that your works do not infringe copyright or any other rights; otherwise, get the permission for the art images, movies, pictures, or music used in your works.
  5. If third parties claim violation of the rights or any damages, the applicants shall deal with them on their own responsibility and cost. The committee of the competition will assume no responsibility for them.
  6. The committee may inquire about contents for exhibition.
  7. If your work is applied to the following cases, send the demonstration video of your work:
    - The size of your work is so large, such as a large-scale installation, and it seems to be difficult to exhibit it, since a special lighting environment is required, or a lot of staffs are required to set your works at the venue.
    - Your work may make the venue dirty or damage it.
  8. If your works produce a quite large sound, let us know it in advance.
  9. If the venue manager or audience complains or claims any damages, the applicants shall deal with them on their own responsibility and cost. The committee of the competition will assume no responsibility for them.
  10. No network environment is provided in the exhibition gallery.
  11. Please comply with the Art & Technology Tohoku Code of Conduct.

     Note: The first 3 minutes of the movies will be judged.

  3. Interactive works (no presentation/demonstration at the venue)

     Submissions: thumbnails, work descriptions, URLs to videos
     Notes: Please include a description of the work and a demo. The judging will be for the first 3 minutes.

     Submissions: Thumbnails, work descriptions, exhibition details PDF.

    ※Thumbnails and URLs submitted at the time of application will be displayed at the time of exhibition. For the convenience of screening at the venue, please make it available for YouTube or download.
    ※Thumbnails should be jpg files with a size of 1280 horizontal and 720 vertical. (It may be resized here for convenience)

◆Exhibition

  1. Non-interactive works (Submission Methods 1 to 3) will be projected at the venue using a projector. However, in the event of many submissions, works to be projected at the venue will be screened in advance.
  2. For interactive works and digital technologies (Submission Methods 4), a table (in width about 80cm, in depth about 80cm) and electrical outlets will be prepared at the exhibition gallery. The applicants may use your own computers. If you need a wider space, let us know it through Submission Site when you apply for the competition.
  3. If your works produce a quite large sound, let us know it in advance.
  4. No network environment is provided in the exhibition gallery.
  5. If the venue manager or audience complains or claims any damages, the applicants shall deal with them on their own responsibility and cost. The committee of the competition will assume no responsibility for them.

◆Schedule

Submissions will be accepted from May 7,2024 (Tue.)
The deadline for uploading work is June 24, 2024 (Mon.).
Exhibition will be held on July 20, 2024 (Sat.) in Design and Media Technology Collaboration Studio, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Iwate University, Japan.

 

                    

◆How to manage works submitted

  1. The submitted works (electronic files) will not be returned in principle. Be sure to make backup copies of the works. If you bring your works or equipment to the venue, remove them on your own responsibility. Do not leave your works and any waste materials at the venue.
  2. The committee shall not be responsible for any accidents (damages or loss) occurred during transportation of the works or application forms. If necessary, take out insurance or take necessary actions.
  3. The committee may release the prize-winning works in public at several events or for the promotion of the competition. The committee will not claim any other right.
  4. If the committee makes a copy of or edits submitted works due to judgment or the reasons described in item 3 above, the management of the copies will be left up to the committee.

■ JUDGMENT AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS

  1. Judging: The committee will judge the works impartially and severely at the exhibition gallery
    Please note that a preliminary screening may be conducted in case of a large number of entries.
  2. Prizes: "Most Excellence Prize" and "Excellence Prize" will be awarded to excellent works and technologies. Special prize, such as "Special Jury Prize", might also be given
  3. Announcement of winners: The winners will be announced in the awarding ceremony to close the exhibition. After the workshop event, they will be exhibited on the website of Art & Technology Tohoku 2024
  4. Admission for the workshop event is free and anyone may attend it. Access to the portal site requires pre-registration.
